Primary School Henry Dunant

Vienna

The existing Henry Dunant Primary School is to be expanded from the current 13 to 33 classrooms through a new extension, while the existing building will undergo a full renovation.
The new school building integrates sensitively into the heterogeneous urban fabric between the large-scale Karl-Seitz-Hof and the finer-grained residential structures. Two offset main volumes, together with the preserved classroom wing, define a clearly structured streetscape and engage in dialogue with the surrounding built environment. A deliberate opening towards Dunantgasse creates a central forecourt, while the green space is preserved and interwoven with the building.

The design relies on a sustainable hybrid construction: reinforced concrete for the basement and ground floor, timber construction with exposed solid wood ceilings and concrete cores for the upper floors. Architecturally, the project responds to the scale and context through staggered volumes, articulated façades, and warm timber surfaces. An open spatial structure with a central atrium, clustered learning units, and flexible learning landscapes supports an integrative, nature-oriented educational concept and enhances the spatial and functional quality of the school site.
