The first construction phase involved the building of a pedestrian tunnel, allowing direct access to the main hall. Pedestrian traffic flows and a clear sense of orientation were key features in designing the layout. Furthermore, the train station in Graz adapts to the needs of the disabled as one of the first ones in Austria.
During the second construction phase, the areas surrounding the main hall were converted for retail and commercial use. A glass covered mall now serves as a main thoroughfare; its presence advertised in the forecourt by means of a twin shell media facade. Artwork by Peter Kogler provides a new atmosphere in the hall.
