Due to shipping requirements which demanded that the bridge spanned a distance of 300m without supports, a wide load bearing structure was needed. To minimise visual impact on the surroundings, a suspension bridge with slanted Y-shaped pylons was chosen. In light of the delicate nature of the surrounding urban and country landscape, a somewhat less imposing structure was favoured over a load bearing structure with tall pylons.
The large network of suspension cables, running between the stiffening trusses and main cable, were designed to be angled according to need. Transparent wind protection barriers, made from a PTFE lattice with approximately 50% perforation were fitted on both sides and operate independently of the load bearing structure.
