Guggenheim Helsinki

Helsinki, Finland

The new construction is consciously not positioned as an expressive structure near the waterfront but rather follows the surroundings in terms of proportionality and scale. The porosity and openness of the waterfront emphasizes the integration into the skyline. The aimed integration of the museum into the cityscape is achieved by the intense interweaving of the building into its surroundings. Not only the plaza or the direct surroundings around the building but the museum itself becomes part of the public space with its wall and roof surfaces. The emerging terraces, tribunes, pub gardens and pathways vitalize the area any time of the day and form a new local hot spot including the museum.
