The power plant is part of the building complex of the former “Austria Tabakwerke”. The construction of the tobacco factory is the first extensive skeleton structure in Austria, designed by the architects Peter Behrens and Alexander Popp and has been under monument protection since 1981.
After the building had lost its function as the area’s energy center, it was brought back to life with new uses. On the ground floor there is a brewery including a beer pub, on the first floor in the former boiler house there is an event hall, the brewing plant of the “Linzer Bier” brand and a beer culture and information center.
The planning and implementation was based on a concept (permit application, general details) by Schremmer-Jell and was characterized by great care in dealing with the existing building and ongoing close coordination with the Bundesdenkmalamt. New parts are clearly recognizable, the historical stock is being renovated, but is allowed to keep its patina.
