Federal school cluster BHAK, BHAS and BAfEP

Liezen

The existing buildings from the 1970s on the site are to be demolished in their entirety and replaced by a new building for over 600 day pupils and around 100 evening pupils. The realisation is to take place in phases, successively to the demolition.

The building follows a clear, geometric design language and has a compact configuration. Its placement on the eastern boundary of the planning area maximises the open space to the west, which will be used as a continuous green space once the existing buildings have been demolished. At the same time, the existing building will remain usable during the construction phase. A central, open interior space accommodates the vertical circulation of the school. The individual areas of use are grouped around this light-flooded building centre. While the classrooms have a more closed design, home bases and learning islands open up to the outer façade as recesses and create spatial references to the open space.

The structural concept is based on a timber-concrete hybrid construction. Load-bearing walls are made of solid wood, while the reinforcing cores of the stairwells are made of reinforced concrete. This choice reflects both the local conditions and the overarching sustainability concept.
